Cambodia

"They say that time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself" – Andy Warhol

Cambodia now
Cambodia is one of the ten poorest countries in the world, torn apart country and still not over the war. The population lost all trust in each other and the government, very corrupt, is not helping the recovery. It forces people out of their homes and onto the streets and outskirts of the cities. It then claims the land and builds new hotels and other beautifull buildings, so from the outside the country looks good. A closer and finer look shows a place you don't want to see, a country that is very much in need of help. The people live on garbage dumps and near sewers. They have to beg to survive and the children neither go to school, nor have proper care. Many women have to sell themselves to eat and support their families. There are no medical facilities to help these people, nor any other public facilities common in the West.

The population
The average age is now around 20, and this means that the number of children is multiplying rapidly. This is common in very poor countries, and many are orphans. They have had to survive by themselves without home, food or education. How can these children learn hygiene and how to read and write? We need to start together to help these children and make a difference. They Cambodia are the future of their country!

The family situation
In Cambodia we see a lot of big families due to cultural factors and the lack of birth control. The children have to work and if they are very unlucky they will be sold for as little as 150 dollars to work at a brothel in the big city. Violence is common, the children don't have enough food, have to work, and are not going to school. Many parents are under influence of alcohol or drugs.
