The first "workshop day"

We have many new plans and ideas for 2012. And the first of these plans, the workshop day, kicked off on Friday the 13th. (Yes, we like a challenge.)
The idea behind the workshop day is that the children can choose individually what they would like to do. This means there needs to be a large and diverse offering of workshops for the children to pick from. And the workshops need to be of a high standard, they last for the entire morning or afternoon. This also gives us the opportunity to discover every child's interests and talents. Important information for the future.

For this first workshop day there were enough good ideas. Every workshop has its own minimum and maximum number of participants. Bopha assisted the children in the selection of a workshop. Because of course it's easy to choose the same workshop as your best friend picked. Bopha encouraged the students to follow their own preferences, which worked very well. All workshops met the requirement for minimum number of participants, so that they could all go ahead.

The day itself was a big success. It has hardly ever been this quiet at the PDC. In every class there was a group of children working hard to complete their chosen assignment. Sitha showed the children how to make a Cambodian fish basket, while Bopha made "Cambodian cakes" with a group of children, Charlotte and Daniela taught the kids how to make a kite. Other children learnt how to work with digital camera's together with Sanne and Samnang. Ceut and Ryan made a movie with the children, while Yvonne and Mirte showed them different techniques when working with clay.

During the last fifteen minutes of the morning and the afternoon the children were able to show and tell the others what they had done. We got to see a few end results and we all got a cake from the baking class. The movie would not be ready until later, after it has been edited. Some groups even had someone who was willing to do the presentation by themselves. What a great day; we are already looking forward to the next workshop day at the beginning of March.
