Home-based project with mothers launched

The idea existed for a long time already and a lot of preparations were necessary , but since this week the home-based production program at our PURE! Dream Center is a reality. It is a project where disadvantaged women in the beginning mainly the mothers of the PDC kids, learn to make products from natural materials, materials that are easy and inexpensive to obtain. With the new skills they learn, these women can earn an additional income for their families in the future. A stable income besides the risky farming where they are mainly involved in. An important and desirable change.

In addition, the home-based production program provides these women a great opportunity to combine work and family life. They also get the opportunity to take part in decision making processes, they have control over resources and above all it results in a lot of confidence. Results that are actually at least as important as an extra income!

This week, four women started the first training; an exercise that is part of the pilot phase of the project. The women learn to weave palm leaves into boxes, tubes, envelopes and pendants. Not as easy as it looks! The final products are mainly used as packaging material for jewelry, candles, soaps and incense for example, but are also great to use as storage boxes or just as decoration. The training will last for 3 weeks and once the products are good enough, we will start looking for buyers in Siem Reap. The women find it fun and visibly enjoy the chance to learn something new. They are really motivated to get involved in this project and make something of it for themselves. PURE! offers them the necessary support!

The first women are the mothers of: Soknoon and Sona, Chen, Chhay and Chhen!
